Radio Devon presenter unveils new Mannamead care home

Guests have been popping into a new care home to admire its gardens ever since it was unveiled by a radio presenter.

Greenacres Care Centre in Mannamead was revealed to guests at a grand opening last Tuesday by BBC Radio Devon presenter Judi Spiers.

Formerly the 104-bed Bedford Park care home on Pearn Road, it has been transformed into a 39-bed dementia care home and will also open 35 one-bed and two-bed assisted-living flats in September or October.

The doors of Greenacres were open from 10am until 4pm on the day and everyone was invited to view the building and its 2.5 acre gardens.

Four residents moved in today and the rest will be settled into their separate en suite rooms four at a time.

Some are moving from different care homes and some from outside of the county.

“Since they first came to visit, the guests have been coming in every day for cups of tea and biscuits to look out at the garden,” said Karen.

“We want the people coming in here to feel at home and they are all guests. It’s for people with all different types of backgrounds.”

Karen said that radio presenter Judi Spiers’ only words were that she wished a home like this was available five years ago when her mother was alive.

Owners Philip and Tonya Gerry already run two other dementia care homes in Mannamead Road – the 44-bed Charlton House and the 36-bed Thorn Park.
